In ihrer Arbeit „looks like music“ beschäftigt sich Heike Kaltenbrunner mit dem Zusammenspiel von Bild und Ton sowie der daran geknüpften Thematik der grafischen Notation. Sie schreibt sich mit dieser Beschäftigung in eine fast hundertjährige Tradition ein: Seit dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert gab es eine Reihe von avantgardistischen Bewegungen, die sich einschlägig mit diesem Themenfeld auseinandersetzten. Am Anfang dieser Auseinandersetzungen standen experimentelle Untersuchungen des noch relativ jungen Mediums Film in den 1920er Jahren, die es sich zum Ziel machten, Ton in Form von kurzen abstrakten Filmsequenzen bildlich zu erschließen. Exemplarisch hierfür sind etwas die Arbeiten von Hans Richter. In den 1950er Jahren zeichnete sich dann vor allem im Umfeld von John Cage ein vermehrtes Interesse für die grafische Notation ab. Waren diese historischen Annäherungen in ihrer Technik noch an analogen Medien ausgerichtet und damit auf die Interpretationsleistung ihrer Produzenten beim Bild-Ton-Transfer angewiesen, gibt es heute im Rahmen der Digitalisierung die relativ einfache Möglichkeit, denselben Binärcode entweder als Bild oder als Ton auszugeben. Hier scheint sich der Extremfall abzuzeichnen, dass von ein und demselben Medium aus verschiedene Ausgaben, egal ob Bild oder Ton, möglich sind. Doch ist das Verhältnis von Bild und Ton wirklich so simpel, wie es die herkömmliche Interpretation von Digitalität suggeriert?

Die Frage nach den Eigenarten von Ton und Bild, ihren Differenzen und einem möglichen Verhältnis wirkt jedenfalls viel komplexer, wenn man Heike Kaltenbrunners Arbeit „looks like music“ gegenübersteht. Denn hier geht es nicht darum, eine bestimmte grafische Struktur zu betrachten und daneben noch ein bestimmtes Musikstück zu hören, die sich als aus derselben „Quelle“ gespeiste Bezüge verstehen lassen. Die Erfahrung ist vielmehr synästhetisch und lässt erst im Nachhinein die Frage nach Ähnlichkeiten und Differenzen aufbrechen. Es geht auch nicht primär um eine spezifische Bestimmung dieses Tons oder dieses Bildes. Eher handelt es sich darum herauszufinden, wie sie aufeinander bezogen sind. Nicht eine inhaltliche Bestimmung gibt also Aufschluss über die kritische Perspektive dieser Arbeit, sondern eine Fokussierung darauf, wie sie das Verhältnis von Bild und Ton, grafischer Notation und musikalischer Interpretation darstellt.

Wie wird dieses Verhältnis in „looks like music“ nun dargestellt? Die Arbeit schlägt zunächst vor, dass die Beziehung keine einseitige oder einfache ist: Notation und Interpretation, grafische Installation und Musik bringen sich gegenseitig hervor. Auch wenn es einleuchtend erscheinen mag, dass es zuerst eine Notation geben muss, damit diese interpretiert werden kann, ist es doch nicht weniger offensichtlich, dass eine Notation nur entstehen kann, wenn sie schon im Prozess ihrer „Niederschrift“ auf ihre möglichen Formen der Interpretation gerichtet ist. Eine Notation ist nur dann Notation, wenn sie durch die Interpretation als Notation bereits geöffnet worden ist. Ohne den möglichen Horizont der Interpretation wäre sie „lediglich“ eine grafische Form, die in ihrer Zeichenhaftigkeit für allerlei lose Möglichkeiten einstehen könnte. Es ist aber gerade der spezifische Horizont der musikalischen Interpretation, der in „looks like music“ eröffnet wird: Die grafische Installation, die sich wiederum aus der fotografischen Arbeit „found some magic“ versteht, kann auch als Notation markiert werden, wenn sie ein „erstes Mal“ so interpretiert wird. Vielleicht ist es ja jenes „erste Mal“ der Öffnung einer grafischen Form als Notation eines Musikstückes, die Heike Kaltenbrunner hier erfahrbar macht. Und diese Er-Öffnung wird – wie schon der Fotografiezyklus, von dem das Projekt ausgeht, vorschlägt –in der alltäglichen Erfahrung nur selten evident und konfrontiert seine Betrachter so mit einem kleinen Stück Magie.

From november 27th to december 5th the project stopped over in Bad Radgersburg, Austria, in course of the festival Social Sound Systems.

‘Von Bahnhof nach unbekannte Straße’ was mostly text based, a speakers voice, directing a way through the city and its surroundings, from the railway station to an unknown street. In the beginning it sounded pretty much like the speaker of a navigation system, but the further it got away from the directed path, the personage of the speaker, who lended his voice to the machine, got more and more in the center. He started to add little stories and anecdotes – more and more absurd.

A flock of starlings in the blue light is like a heavy storm, overwhelmingly beautiful and breathtaking – if you don’t have anything to loose, like property or harvest.
One possibility to scare invading flocks away from vineyards is to implement speaker systems that play sounds of barking dogs or hawks. The acoustic land art project “RAPTORreloaded” undertakes the experiment to incorporate sound art into these system

This hardware hack was developed by Franz Xaver in the 1980ies. He would perhaps add “…but i think a lot of people came to that point”. Anyway. It broached the issue of the deconstructing of the TV image and was shown at the Secession in Vienna.

Last year i made a sound installation where this oscilloscopes are pulsars. This photographs were shot together with the photographer Peter Hoiss

A cooperation with the Media arts laboratory/ Franz Xaver
Loops of pulsar-signals, as well as the live stream of the radio telescope RT03 are assigned to a multiple speaker scenario. Fed to manipulated tube monitors the signals deflect the electron beam that formerly formed the TV picture. The sounds of the “dead” stars thus generate pictures and slowly destroy the cathode tubes and burn the screens – until they end with a last flash.

„Sound „pulling tugether“ the image into a point of light, sound, destroying the mechanical heart of the machine transmitting the image. Or is it, the reverse, the process of the annihilation of the picture, transforming it into a narrow light flow (ray) that gives birth to sound? Musical sound, not cacophonic, but a deep bass, well-tempered profound internal sound, which can be created by a living organism through its vibrations, or the sound of the Universe. It reminds one of ancient ritual practices – Bon, shamans, whose influence on the world is practically realized with the help of sound, the vibration on fine levels, making the world turn into a screen, returning sound to the point of origin, the screen, which, like a fine shell, begins to shudder from the sound, shudder and… at one moment the screen is ready to collapse, having shown the possibility of transition between the visible and that which is beyond its limits.

“Brot gegen Sätze” is trading sentences for slices of bread meaning something like “bread for words”adverting to the saying “für ein Butterbrot arbeiten” which would mean “working for peanuts”. Whereas “gegensätze” means polarity, difference, contradiction.

Somebody swaped for example:

“The media theoretician F.E.R. Rakuschan refused to work for a slice of bread”

whereas Mr. Rakuschan reconsidered later on and traded

Besides the attempt of broaching the issues intellectual work and countertrade it
was very interesting to observe my barter partners getting into creative-stress trying to contribute something meaningful, even though i was completly satisfied with “I am hungry” and there were no requirements regarding ambitious content at all.

This took place at the opening reception of Franz Xavers exhibition “biosphären” during the Resonance Festival, on 28. November 2007 at Prekarium Vienn.

as sharing is caring this is my recipe:

“bread”

1,5 kg of flour ( 1 kg rye, 1/4 kg wheat, 1/4 kg spelt)
1 packet of yeast (no sourdough, but at least selfmade)
1 1/2 tablespoons of sugar
3/4 liter of warm water
1 tablespoon of bread spices (caraway, anis, coriander, fennel)
3 coffeespoons of salt

Mix the water with the sugar and the yeast.
Mix the flour with salt and spices.
Then mix it all together and work it
(Empirically proven, singing whilst kneading causes positve effects)
Let it rest and rise, form loaves and prack it with a fork.
Bake it for 15 min. with 200° and for 45min with 160°.
Knock on the back of it. If it sounds hollow its ready.

Stones? Textures of granite? Or veins; fossils of miniscule sizes magnified to the size of the visible; or they are alive, and only the stillness of the photograph makes them motionless? Maybe they are the traces, captured in time, of the movement of heavenly bodies, travelling in multitudes and thus reminding one of live organisms? “Dune” and associations with many other fantasy films flood in instantly,

ultimately leaving a strong feeling that one had come across images in which science and art had become a single whole. The textures, which have grown in the black and white photographs of Heike Kaltenbrunner – are due to her enthusiasm for science and her understanding of creativity as a laboratory. Is it the spirit of the 20s of the of the 20th century?…
